BioMock

I’m on a mission to use as little virgin material as possible in the production of my work. I began this venture last year, and am at the barest beginnings of an extensive and exciting exploration. BioMock is my latest endeavor.

Synthetic Infiltration

I seek to bring care into carelessness and mindfulness into mindlessness. My effort is a tiny speck of dust in the vast spread of our plastic planet, but to not fight at all is to lose completely.

With this body of work I explores our relationship to plastic. While making the work I considered questions like, what do we consider waste? Why do we consider it waste? Is it waste? How can we prevent wastefulness? I found the mimicry of biological forms within the work intriguing, as plastic is slowly supplanting biological life in the oceans.

This is my first step toward becoming a less wasteful artist. I am excited to broaden this small beginning.

Amensalistic Symbiosis

"Amensalism, association between organisms of two different species in which one is inhibited or destroyed and the other is unaffected. There are two basic modes: competition (q.v.), in which a larger or stronger organism excludes a smaller or weaker one from living space or deprives it of food, and antibiosis, in which one organism is unaffected but the other is damaged or killed by a chemical secretion." - Encyclopedia Britannica

In this body of work I explore my relationship to the environment. How do my actions harm the planet I love? In the end, will my choices damage not just the world, but my own body?

Augmenting Lessons

I see a physical collective - water, soil, atmosphere, fauna and flora - hot and pained. It sweats through exercises of change, pushed to the brink of agony.

Choice offers me 1) withdrawal or 2) embrace.

1) Run from the enflamed moment. Construct a wall of ignorance. Mute the screams of the lost.

2) Undertake the tumult. Build knowledge. And with this force of heat and hurt, raise redemption.

This body of work started as an expression of personal loss then extended to address global losses - the health and safety of our planet's ecosystems. It also sought to develop awareness for threatened and endangered species in California.

Lessons: Insides Out

Hot and painful, I sweat through the exercise of change. I am open to the heat and hurt. I breathe through the agony — breathe out until empty. When release comes it is pure and sweet. My inner self is exhausted, but limber. Fire has burned away my chaff and I am clean.

Through this work I explore the experience of holding my heart open during painful life-changes. My hope is that as you converse with the work you find your own story.
